The Southwestern National Tomahawk and Knife Championship hit the ground running last year with its debut in Belen, NM. This year we are looking to continue our success when we hold the 2009 SWNTKC. Our reigning champions, Mike “Alamo” Bainton and Erica Molock will look to retain their titles while our Amateur champion from 2008, Lone Wolf, may find the going a little tougher having graduated to the Pro Division with his victory last year. The Poff boys made a statement last year in the Junior and Youth Divisions with a clean sweep and will be a force again this year.
The last 12 months have seen tremendous growth in our sport. The World Knife Championships in October 2008 in Austin, TX and The Alamo (yes…THE Alamo) was a great success. We had another fantastic turnout for the Texas State Knife and Tomahawk Championship up in Malakoff, TX in April 2009 and we saw the rebirth of a very important throw in historic Creede, CO in June 2009. Exciting times for all tomahawk and knife throwers.
As for this year’s competition, some things will be the same and some things may be a little different. For those of you who know Dan and me personally, you understand what this means. You will no doubt come prepared...
As we continue to see interest in the sport we love grow, we hope to build upon the tradition we have started and strive to hold the best possible event for all those folks out there who have made this sport, this family what it is today.
I am looking forward to September and seeing all of our old friends and making a few new ones.
